The festive fortnight: 26/12/22
The last week of the year is typically quiet for data, but as we move into January we’ll see manufacturing and services PMI reports for all major economies, German and eurozone inflation figures and the US nonfarm payrolls. Earnings come from Conagra Brands, Walgreens Boots Alliance and Constellation Brands early in the New Year.
Monday 26 December
As Monday is a holiday in the UK, the US and most of Europe there is little data scheduled. Late in the evening we’ll see Japan’s November jobs/applications ratio, unemployment rate and retail sales data.

Tuesday 27 December
While the UK remains on holiday, the US returns to action with the latest goods trade balance, wholesale inventories and retail inventories ex auto, plus the S&P/Case-Shiller house price index. In Japan the November industrial production data is released at 10 minutes to midnight (UK time).

Wednesday 28 December
In the US on Wednesday the November pending home sales data is released. Last time out the number of US homes under contract fell for the fifth month in a row, down by 4.6% month-on-month.
Thursday 29 December
A light schedule on Thursday includes UK mortgage approvals for November and, in the US, the latest weekly jobless claims and crude oil inventories.

Friday 30 December
There’s an early close in the UK on the last Friday of the year. In the US the December Chicago PMI is released, after November’s fall to 37.2 indicated a deeper contraction in factory activity, while early on Saturday we’ll get China’s NBS manufacturing and non-manufacturing PMI.
Monday 2 January
We start 2023 with December’s manufacturing PMI data for France, Germany, eurozone and Australia. Otherwise, new figures are thin on the ground.
Tuesday 3 January
More manufacturing PMI reports are released on Tuesday, for China, the US and the UK. Keep an eye out too for the latest German unemployment change, due at 8.55am (UK time).
Wednesday 4 January
While Japan’s manufacturing PMI is published on Wednesday, we’ll also see the services PMI for France, Germany, the eurozone and Australia. Other data includes the December German CPI (after November showed annual CPI inflation easing slightly to 10.0%) and, in the US, the ISM’s manufacturing PMI and the JOLTs labour market report.
Thursday 5 January
Consumer goods firm Conagra Brands reports to the market on Thursday, as shares hit new highs in December after trailing the market for several years. Figures are also due from pharmacy chain owner Walgreens Boots Alliance and US beverage company Constellation Brands. We’ll have services PMI figures for China, the US and the UK, and construction PMI data for the eurozone, France and Germany, plus the latest German trade balance.

Friday 6 January
In the UK on Friday the Halifax publishes its house price index for December. Also look out for Japanese services PMI, UK construction PMI, eurozone CPI, Germany factory orders and eurozone and German retail sales. In the US we’ll get the latest ISM non-manufacturing PMI and the first nonfarm payrolls release of 2023.
