The week ahead: 03/04/23
Ahead of the Easter weekend we have a light earnings schedule, including Conagra Brands, EnQuest and Constellation Brands, plus a production update from Ferrexpo. Watch out for the RBA’s latest decision on Australian interest rates on Tuesday; German, US and Australian trade balance figures throughout the week; and Friday’s US nonfarm payrolls data for March.
Monday 3 April
Late on Sunday the March manufacturing PMI data for Australia was released, and this is followed throughout Monday by manufacturing PMI updates for Japan, China, France, Germany, the eurozone, the UK and the US, plus in the US the ISM’s own manufacturing PMI. The Bank of Japan also releases its quarterly tankan survey of current and expected business conditions.

Tuesday 4 April
On Tuesday we’ll know the Reserve Bank of Australia’s latest decision on interest rates, with last week’s lower than expected CPI inflation rate putting pressure on the bank to delay a further rate hike. Look out too for Germany’s February trade balance and, in the US, the February factory orders and the JOLTs labour market report, both due at 3pm (UK time). Irrigation equipment firm Lindsay also reports to the market.

Wednesday 5 April

US consumer goods company Conagra Brands and petroleum exploration and production firm EnQuest both post earnings on Wednesday, the oil and gas group having recently deferred drilling at one North Sea field due to the UK’s windfall tax. We’ll also see services PMI data for Australia (late on Tuesday), Japan, France, Germany, the eurozone, the UK and the US. Other data includes the latest German factory orders, the US trade balance for February and the ISM’s US non-manufacturing PMI.

Thursday 6 April
Thursday’s highlights include an earnings update from alcoholic drinks firm Constellation Brands and a production report from mining company Ferrexpo. The Ukrainian iron ore producer has struggled with exceptional operating conditions since the Russian invasion began last year. Keep an eye out too for China’s services PMI data, French, German, eurozone and UK construction PMI, the latest Australian trade balance, the Halifax index of UK house prices for March and Germany’s industrial production figures for February.

Friday 7 April
Despite the Good Friday holiday, the first Friday of the month still brings us the US nonfarm payrolls and unemployment rate. In February the US economy added 311,000 jobs, while unemployment rose more than expected to 3.6%. Early on Friday we’ll also see Japan’s household spending update for February.
