The week ahead: 06/03/23
DAX components Henkel, Continental, Symrise, Brenntag, Deutsche Post and Hannover Re report to the market this week, along with Brown-Forman, Legal & General, Campbell’s, Ulta, Aviva and Gap. Keep an eye out too for eurozone and German retail sales data; eurozone, Japanese and UK GDP updates; Chinese and German CPI inflation; and the latest US nonfarm payrolls on Friday.
Monday 6 March
A light schedule to start the week includes eurozone, French, German and UK construction PMI data, plus US factory orders. Eurozone retail sales data for January, due at 10am (UK time), will give us an update on consumer demand in Europe after December’s reading showed a 2.7% decline month-on-month for a 2.8% drop year-on-year.

Tuesday 7 March
German consumer goods company Henkel posts full-year earnings on Tuesday. The DAX component recently signed a deal with Shell to provide renewable-based ingredients for its largest laundry brands. Updates are also due from industrial equipment rental group Ashtead, US retailer Dick’s Sporting Goods, mining firm Fresnillo, German food industry group GEA, UK bakery chain Greggs, oil and gas firm Tullow Oil and estate agency group Foxtons. With UK house prices expected to fall this year, the Halifax house price index will make interesting reading, while we’ll also get Australian and Chinese trade balance data, the RBA’s decision on Australian interest rates and, late in the day, Japan’s current account.

Wednesday 8 March

DAX components Continental, Symrise and Brenntag report to the market on Wednesday along with alcoholic drinks firm Brown-Forman, financial services group Legal & General, insurance group Hiscox, construction materials supplier SIG, telecoms testing firm Spirent, fashion group Fossil and iconic soup brand Campbell’s, currently utilising AI to inspire and develop new products. Keep an eye out for German industrial production and retail sales data, final Q4 GDP figures for the eurozone and Japan, and the US trade balance and JOLTs labour market report.

Thursday 9 March
Two more DAX components, Deutsche Post and Hannover Re, post earnings on Thursday. Also look out for figures from beauty store chain Ulta, insurance firm Aviva, publishing group Informa, clothing retailer Gap, steel distributor Klöckner, restaurant chain El Pollo Loco, UK construction group Kier and German fashion house Hugo Boss. Other releases include the UK RICS house price balance for February, Chinese CPI and PPI and Japanese household spending.
Friday 10 March
The week draws to a close with the crucial US nonfarm payrolls (after a surprise gain of 517,000 jobs in January) and unemployment rate, plus the federal budget balance. Before that we’ll see the Bank of Japan’s monetary policy decision; UK GDP, trade balance and industrial and manufacturing production figures for January; plus German CPI data for February.
