The week ahead: 10/04/23
We’ll get an update on the cost-of-living crisis this week with eurozone and US retail sales data and the BRC’s UK retail sales monitor, plus Chinese, US, German and French CPI. The FOMC publishes the minutes of its last US rate-setting meeting on Wednesday, while towards the end of the week the earnings schedule picks up with reports from Tesco, Progressive, Fastenal, Delta, UnitedHealth, JPMorgan Chase, Wells Fargo, Citigroup and PNC Financial.
Monday 10 April
While UK and Europe enjoy the Easter Monday holiday, in Japan the current account figures for February are published. Meanwhile in the US, the Conference Board releases its employment trends index for March.

Tuesday 11 April
Tuesday brings us the NAB’s Australian business confidence reading for March, plus the latest Chinese CPI and PPI and eurozone retail sales data for February. In the UK we’ll get the BRC’s retail sales monitor for March, after February’s data showed total sales rising 5.2% year-on-year but falling sales volumes, while a light earnings schedule includes US used-vehicle retailer CarMax.

Wednesday 12 April
Wednesday’s action is mostly in the US, with the latest CPI data, the federal budget balance for March and the minutes of the last FOMC monetary policy meeting. The committee last month raised the federal funds rate target by 25 basis points to between 4.75% and 5%, while Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland president Loretta Mester last week said the US central bank likely has further rate hikes ahead.

Thursday 13 April

UK supermarket Tesco issues its full-year results on Thursday, after chairman John Allan last week said he cannot forecast when UK food price inflation will peak. Updates are also due from US insurance company Progressive, industrial distributor Fastenal and US airline Delta. Keep an eye out too for the latest UK GDP, trade balance, industrial and manufacturing production and the RICS house price balance, plus Australian employment change, China’s March trade balance, Germany’s March CPI, eurozone industrial production and the latest US PPI.

Friday 14 April
US healthcare group UnitedHealth posts quarterly earnings on Friday. UK regulators recently referred the Dow component’s acquisition of UK healthcare tech firm EMIS for an in-depth investigation. UK recruitment company Hays is also set to report, along with major banking firms JPMorgan Chase, Wells Fargo, Citigroup and PNC Financial. Key data releases include the latest French CPI, UK Q4 labour productivity and, in the US, the retail sales and industrial production updates for March, plus February’s business inventories and retail inventories excluding auto and the preliminary University of Michigan consumer sentiment.
