The week ahead: 13/03/23
The health of the UK labour market will be in the news this week as the latest average earnings and claimant count data is released. We’ll also get inflation updates with US, French and eurozone CPI releases scheduled, and the ECB will meet to decide monetary policy for the eurozone. Earnings are due from Volkswagen, BMW, E.ON, Adobe and FedEx.
Monday 13 March
The US Conference Board releases its employment trends index for February at 2pm (UK time) on Monday. While fresh data is generally thin on the ground, late in the day in Australia we’ll get the Westpac consumer sentiment for March.

Tuesday 14 March
German carmaker Volkswagen leads the earnings on Tuesday, after last week putting pressure on the EU to increase green subsidies to match the US, as it weighs up investment in new battery factories. Also look out for figures from US housebuilder Lennar and German airport operator Fraport. In the UK we’ll see the latest labour market data including average earnings and claimant count change, while other key releases include the Australian NAB business confidence, US CPI inflation figures for February and OPEC’s monthly oil production report.

Wednesday 15 March

DAX components BMW and E.ON report to the market on Wednesday, along with design software firm Adobe, specialty chemicals company Lanxess and mining firm Ferrexpo. We’ll also get industrial production figures for China and the eurozone, French CPI and, in the US, the latest PPI, the New York Empire State manufacturing index and February retail sales (after January smashed expectations with a 3.0% rise month-on-month). Just before midnight, Japan’s February trade balance data is released.

Thursday 16 March
Analysts will be looking at FedEx to deliver healthy earnings on Thursday, as the US courier plans to set up its first Advanced Capability Community in Hyderabad. Updates also come from discount store Dollar General, business services provider Rentokil Initial, media group RTL, manufacturing services firm Jabil, jewellery retailer Signet, gold producer Centamin, German property firm Tag Immobilien, engine manufacturer Deutz and footwear retailer Designer Brands. Meanwhile the ECB will announce its decision on eurozone interest rates. Keep an eye out too for the latest Australian employment change and Japanese industrial production and, in the US, the February building permits, housing starts and import and export price indices, plus the March Philadelphia Fed manufacturing index.

Friday 17 March
Highlights of a relatively quiet Friday include the eurozone CPI update for February (preliminary data showed an annual inflation rate of 8.5%, down slightly from 8.6% in January), along with the wages data for the fourth quarter. In the US watch out for the February industrial production figures and the latest University of Michigan consumer sentiment survey.
