The week ahead: 15/05/23
This week’s data schedule includes eurozone, Chinese, US and Japanese industrial production, UK labour market data, and eurozone and Japanese CPI updates. Keep an eye out too for earnings from Ceconomy, Sohu, Vodafone, Home Depot, Baidu, Cisco, Siemens, Munich Re, Commerzbank, Walmart, BT, easyJet and Deere & Co.
Monday 15 May
We start the week with March industrial production figures for the eurozone (up 1.5% year-on-year in February), while later in the US we’ll see the latest New York Empire State manufacturing index. German electronics retailer Ceconomy reports to the market along with Chinese internet company Sohu.

Tuesday 16 May
Telecoms group Vodafone posts earnings on Tuesday as talks continue to merge its UK mobile network with Three. Updates also come from US DIY retailer Home Depot, Chinese tech firm Baidu, commercial property developer Landsec, UK bakery chain Greggs, healthcare IT firm NextGen and tobacco group Imperial Securities. Macroeconomic data includes the Australian Westpac consumer sentiment, Chinese industrial production and unemployment rate, UK labour market data for April including average earnings and claimant count change, German and eurozone ZEW economic sentiment, eurozone Q1 GDP and March trade balance, and US retail sales and industrial production for April.

Wednesday 17 May

Dow component Cisco reports quarterly earnings on Wednesday, after last week announcing that it will begin manufacturing in India to diversify its global supply chain. We’ll also get updates from DAX 40 components Siemens, Munich Re and Commerzbank, US retailers TJX and Target, e-design automation firm Synopsys, enterprise software group Sage, property developer British Land, credit check firm Experian, video game developer Take-Two, US fast-food chain Jack in the Box and website builder firm Wix. Also look out for Japanese Q1 GDP and March industrial production, the eurozone’s CPI inflation update for April and, in the US, the April building permits and housing starts.

Thursday 18 May
Early on Thursday the latest Japanese trade balance and Australian employment change figures are published, while later in the US we’ll get the Philadelphia Fed manufacturing index and April’s existing home sales. The earnings schedule includes US retailers Walmart and Ross Stores, Chinese e-commerce group Alibaba, engineering firm Applied Materials, UK energy utility National Grid, telecoms group BT, budget airline easyJet, photovoltaics firm Canadian Solar and UK food brand owner Premier Foods.

Friday 19 May
On Friday watch out for Japanese CPI (with annual inflation standing at 3.1% in March) and German PPI data for April, plus GfK’s latest UK consumer confidence report. Quarterly updates come from agricultural machinery firm Deere & Co, sportswear retailer Foot Locker and US bakery Flowers Foods.
