The week ahead: 18/07/22
This week brings data in abundance, including eurozone, UK and Japanese CPI figures, UK wages and unemployment, and earnings from Goldman Sachs, Bank of America, Charles Schwab, IBM, Netflix, Tesla, AT&T, SAP, Verizon and American Express. The Bank of Japan and the ECB are also due to announce their latest interest rate decisions on Thursday.
Monday 18 July
A busy week for earnings data begins with figures from banking heavy-hitters Goldman Sachs, Bank of America and Charles Schwab. Figures are also scheduled from tech multinational IBM, logistics real estate firm Prologis and consumer financial services company Synchrony.

Tuesday 19 July
We’ll get an update on the UK labour market on Tuesday with the latest average earnings and claimant count change. Also look out for eurozone CPI and US building permits and housing starts. Earnings are due from TV streamer Netflix, after last week announcing a deal with Microsoft to launch a new ad-based subscription plan, plus aerospace and defence contractor Lockheed Martin, financial services firm Truist, oilfield services company Halliburton, US media group Omnicom, recruitment group Manpower and photo booth operator Photo-Me International.

Wednesday 20 July
Electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla reports to the market on Wednesday, along with medical device maker Abbott, telecoms infrastructure provider Crown Castle, US railroad CSX, energy infrastructure firm Kinder Morgan, biotech company Biogen, US banks M&T and Northern Trust, oilfield services firm Baker Hughes, aluminium producer Alcoa, car dealership Lithia Motors, UK postal service Royal Mail, food brand owner Premier Foods and payment system provider PayPoint. In the UK we’ll see whether annual inflation has improved from its 40-year high of 9.1% as the latest CPI data is published at 7am (UK time), while in Germany the June PPI is released.

Thursday 21 July
The earnings continue thick and fast on Thursday, with updates from US telecoms giant AT&T, tobacco company PMI, US railroad Union Pacific, investment manager Blackstone, DAX component SAP, US bank Fifth Third, professional services firm Marsh McLennan, surgical equipment producer Intuitive, US carriers United and American Airlines, credit card firm Capital One, insurance company Travelers, clinical lab Quest Diagnostics, toy maker Mattel, online supermarket Ocado and healthcare firm Tenet. The Bank of Japan and the ECB both make monetary policy decisions, the latter having last month indicated that it plans to hike eurozone interest rates in July. We’ll also see the latest Japanese trade balance and the US Philadelphia Fed manufacturing index.
Friday 22 July
Throughout Friday morning we’ll get the flash manufacturing and services PMI data for Japan, France, Germany, the eurozone, the UK and the US. Keep an eye out too for Japan’s national CPI and UK retail sales. Dow components Verizon and American Express report quarterly earnings along with Twitter (currently embroiled in a bitter dispute with Elon Musk over his aborted purchase of the social network), US bank Regions, UK insurance group Beazley and US miner Cleveland-Cliffs.
