The week ahead: 27/03/23
This week we’ll see retail sales data for Australia, Japan and Germany, GDP updates for the US and the UK, and inflation figures for Germany, Tokyo, France and the eurozone. Some standouts of the earnings schedule are Carnival, Ocado, Micron, Lululemon Athletica, Walgreens Boots Alliance, Cintas and Next.
Monday 27 March
Monday’s highlights include the German Ifo business climate index for March, including business expectations and current conditions as measured by a survey of German businesses, plus in the UK the March CBI distributive trades survey. Earnings are due from cruise company Carnival (upgraded in the short term by Deutsche Bank last week), clothing firm PVH and German steel producer Salzgitter.

Tuesday 28 March
Early on Tuesday in Australia the retail sales data for February is published, while later in the day in the US we’ll see the latest goods trade balance, retail inventories (excluding auto) and the Conference Board’s consumer confidence for March. Online supermarket Ocado provides its Q1 trading statement after recently pausing the rollout of new distribution centres in light of falling sales. The earnings schedule also includes computer memory firm Micron, sportswear retailer Lululemon Athletica, pharmacy group Walgreens Boots Alliance, financial services group Jefferies Financial, UK housebuilder Bellway and German car parts maker ElringKlinger.

Wednesday 29 March

Business services provider Cintas reports to the market on Wednesday, along with UK home and clothing retailer Next, semiconductor firm Semtech, payroll services provider Paychex, home goods retailer Conn’s, funeral services firm Dignity and home furnishings company RH. In Germany look out for the GfK consumer climate for April, while in the US we’ll get an update on February’s pending home sales.

Thursday 30 March
CPI inflation figures are due on Thursday for Germany and Tokyo. Keep an eye out too for the final revision of US GDP for the fourth quarter (after Goldman Sachs recently lowered its US growth forecast for 2023), while in Japan the latest jobs/application ratio, industrial production and retail sales figures are released. Updates are also due from German web services firm United Internet and Canadian cybersecurity software company BlackBerry.

Friday 31 March
In China on Friday the NBS issues its manufacturing and non-manufacturing PMI updates, while in the UK we’ll get current account and revised GDP data for the fourth quarter. Other significant releases include German retail sales (down 0.3% month-on-month in January), French consumer spending, German and eurozone unemployment and CPI data for France and the eurozone. In the US watch out for the PCE price index, personal income and spending, the Chicago PMI and the University of Michigan’s consumer sentiment survey.
