With Hollande’s eurobonds demands gathering support, the Franco-German rift grew larger this weekend following the warnings of former German Finance Minister Steinbrueck about a possible official downgrade of France, emphasizing the unwillingness of the EU’s paymaster to find a conciliatory middle ground. As the German-scripted austerity that dominated the EU response to the debt-crisis in the past two years is now openly clashing with French interests and the fissure between Paris and Berlin is widening further, it looks like it is Mario Monti’s turn to speak out.
