The week ahead: 14/03/22

German firms dominate the earnings schedule this week with figures from Deutz, Volkswagen, RWE, Fraport, Tag Immobilien, BMW, E.ON, Rheinmetall, United Internet and Fuchs. We’ll also have key decisions on interest rates in the US, the UK and Japan, plus the latest UK wages and unemployment figures.

Monday 14 March

The French trade balance for January is published on Monday morning. In December France’s trade deficit widened to a new record of €11.32 billion. German engine manufacturer Deutz also issues its annual results.

Tuesday 15 March

   RWE chart: 11/03/22

DAX components Volkswagen and RWE lead the earnings on Tuesday, with the German energy company last week awarded two new projects to build wind farms in Germany. Results are also due from UK publishing and exhibitions group Informa, airport operator Fraport, German real estate company Tag Immobilien and oilfield services firm Petrofac. Among the macroeconomic data look out for Chinese and eurozone industrial production, UK average earnings and claimant count, French CPI, German ZEW economic sentiment, US PPI and the New York Empire State manufacturing index and, late in the day, Japan’s trade balance.

Wednesday 16 March

All eyes on the Fed on Wednesday for the FOMC’s latest decision on US interest rates. We’ve also got Japanese industrial production and US retail sales and business and retail inventories. Reports are scheduled from German carmaker BMW (which last week announced the largest annual profit in its 106-year history), electric utility E.ON, US retailer Williams-Sonoma, manufacturing services firm Jabil, hospitality portfolio owner The Restaurant Group and mining firms Centamin and Ferrexpo.

Thursday 17 March

Attention shifts to the UK on Thursday with the Bank of England’s rate decision, announced at midday. Earlier this month MPC member Michael Saunders said the implications of the Ukraine conflict for the UK economy are currently unclear. The earnings schedule includes IT consultants Accenture, delivery firm FedEx, discount retailer Dollar General, online supermarket Ocado, media group RTL, German arms manufacturer Rheinmetall, telecoms firm United Internet, UK oil company Harbour Energy, jewellery group Signet, renewable energy firm Canadian Solar, footwear group Designer Brands, online food delivery firm Deliveroo and UK cinema group Cineworld.

Friday 18 March

Early on Friday it’s the Bank of Japan’s turn to announce its latest monetary policy decision. This is followed later in the day by eurozone wages and trade balance, and US existing home sales. Full-year results come from German lubricants manufacturer Fuchs.
