The week ahead: 15/11/21
We’ll get an insight into US consumer spending this week with retail sales data on Tuesday, and earnings from US retailers Walmart, Home Depot, Lowe’s, Target, TJX, Macy’s, Ross, Kohl’s and Foot Locker. Inflation is also in the spotlight with CPI data due for France, the UK and the eurozone.
Monday 15 November
Late on Sunday Japan released Q3 GDP figures, followed a few hours later by Chinese industrial and retail sales. Later today we’ve got the eurozone trade balance and the Empire State index of manufacturing conditions in New York. Meanwhile, expect earnings reports from food industry multinational Tyson, law enforcement tech firm Axon and wind turbine manufacturer Nordex.
Tuesday 16 November
US retailers Walmart and Home Depot lead the earnings on Tuesday, with the latter indicating whether Covid has inspired a boom in home improvement projects. We’ll also see figures from telecoms group Vodafone, tobacco firm Imperial Brands, asset manager ICG, property developer Landsec and auto parts retailer Advance. A mixed bag of economic data includes UK average earnings and unemployment, French CPI, eurozone GDP for the third quarter, and US retail sales, industrial production and business and retail inventories. Late in the day Japan’s trade balance is released.
Wednesday 17 November
The UK inflation rate will be in the spotlight on Wednesday, with CPI and PPI data released. In September the annual rate of inflation eased slightly to 3.1%. We’ll also get the eurozone CPI, plus US building permits and housing starts. Among the earnings keep an eye out for US tech firms Cisco and Nvidia, retailers Lowe’s, Target and TJX, Chinese search engine Baidu, credit reporting firm Experian, enterprise software group Sage and property developer British Land.
Thursday 18 November
A busy day for earnings includes enterprise software firms Intuit and Workday, Chinese online retailer JD.com (who last week celebrated China’s Singles Day shopping event), engineering firm Applied Materials, cybersecurity company Palo Alto Networks, UK utility National Grid, German engineer ThyssenKrupp, photovoltaic module manufacturer Canadian Solar and US stores Macy’s, Ross and Kohl’s. In the US look out for the Philadephia Fed manufacturing index, while just before midnight the latest Japanese CPI is revealed.
Friday 19 November
Home improvement retail group Kingfisher provides an update on Friday, along with sportswear store Foot Locker, UK property developer Great Portland Estates and US power distributor UGI. In the morning we’ll see the UK retail sales for October (after September saw a 0.2% drop in sales) and the latest German PPI data.
