The week ahead: 16/05/22

Retail activity dominates the week with UK and eurozone price inflation data, earnings from US retailers Walmart, Home Depot, Lowe’s, Target, TJX, Macy’s and Foot Locker, and UK retail sales figures on Friday. Other notable earnings come from Greggs, Vodafone, Cisco, National Grid and Royal Mail.

Monday 16 May

Chinese industrial production figures kick off the week, followed later in the morning by the latest eurozone trade balance. In the US, the Empire State manufacturing index will be closely watched for signs of improving business conditions. Earnings are scheduled from video game holding company Take-Two, Israeli software firm Wix and UK bakery chain Greggs, currently facing a potential shareholder revolt over executive pay awards.

   Home Depot chart: 13/05/22

Early on Tuesday Japanese household spending figures are released, followed later in the morning by German and eurozone ZEW economic sentiment. Earnings are scheduled from Dow components Walmart and Home Depot, UK telecoms firm Vodafone, aircraft leasing company AerCap, tobacco firm Imperial Brands and commercial property developer Land Securities.

Wednesday 18 May

Inflation takes the spotlight on Wednesday, with CPI data due for the UK and the eurozone. UK annual inflation currently stands at 7.0% and analysts expect a further rise. Other macroeconomic data includes Japanese GDP and industrial production, and US building permits and housing starts. Dow component Cisco reports to the market, along with US retailers Lowe’s, Target, TJX and Macy’s, semiconductor maker Analog Devices, smart tech firm Synopsys, insurance group Aviva, credit check firm Experian, UK fashion house Burberry, property developer British Land and UK food manufacturer Premier Foods.

Thursday 19 May

UK energy network National Grid posts earnings on Thursday, after last week announcing that it will pay back revenues from subsea cables early to help reduce energy bills. We’ll also see figures from engineering firm Applied Materials, US department store Kohl’s, budget airline easyJet, cybersecurity firm Palo Alto Networks, UK postal service Royal Mail, German sugar producer Südzucker and UK defence contractor Qinetiq. Other key data includes Japanese trade balance, Australian employment change and, in the US, the Philadelphia Fed manufacturing index and existing home sales.

Friday 20 May

Early on Friday the Japanese national CPI data for April is released, while later in the morning we’ll get the UK April retail sales. In March sales fell by 1.4% as the cost of living crisis begins to bite. Earnings come from agricultural machinery manufacturer Deere & Co and US sportswear retailer Foot Locker.
