The week ahead: 16/08/21
This week we’ll see an array of figures from US retailers, including Walmart, Home Depot and Lowe’s, plus mining groups First Majestic, BHP and Antofagasta. Tuesday’s UK unemployment data will give us an idea of the health of the labour market, while on Friday we’ll see if UK retail sales have picked up over July.
Monday 16 August
In the early hours we’ll have the first reading of Japanese GDP for the second quarter, plus Chinese and Japanese industrial production figures. In the afternoon keep an eye out for the Empire State index, providing an update on the condition of manufacturing in New York. Today’s earnings reports include chemicals and energy company Sasol and silver-mining group First Majestic.
Tuesday 17 August
US retailer Walmart releases second-quarter figures on Tuesday, along with DIY chain Home Depot, which may spotlight the effect of lumber prices on the home improvement sector. Also providing updates to the market are multinational mining group BHP and scientific research tech firm Agilent. One highlight in the UK will be the labour market report, including unemployment and earnings data. Also watch out for eurozone Q2 GDP and US retail sales and industrial production figures.
Wednesday 18 August
On Wednesday morning we’ll see the July CPI figures for the UK and the eurozone. In June the UK index of consumer goods rose by 2.5% year-on-year. In the US we’ve got July’s building permits and housing starts. Among the earnings, expect reports from GPU maker Nvidia, high-tech supplier Cisco, retailers Lowe’s, Target and TJX, semiconductor company Analog Devices, and construction firm Balfour Beatty.
Thursday 19 August
Antofagasta posts its half-year report on Wednesday. The copper-mining group has been operating amid a 12-year drought in Chile. Figures also come from engineering firm Applied Materials, cosmetics group Estée Lauder and retailers Ross and Macy’s. New macroeconomic data includes Australian employment and the US Philadelphia Fed Manufacturing Index.
Friday 20 August
Early on Friday the national CPI data for Japan is released. Earlier this month the Tokyo CPI showed the first annual rise in a year. At 9.30 BST we’ll get the latest UK retail sales figures. The week then draws to a close with quarterly reports from agricultural machinery firm Deere & Co, and trainer retailer Foot Locker.
