The week ahead: 18/04/22
After the Easter weekend we have more earnings in the financial services sector, including Bank of America, Charles Schwab, BNY Mellon, Synchrony and American Express, plus figures from Netflix, IBM, Travelers, Tesla, Proctor & Gamble and Verizon. We’ll also see eurozone inflation data, US existing home sales and UK retail sales.
Monday 18 April
While European markets are closed for Easter Monday, in China the latest GDP and industrial production data is released. Financial services dominates the earnings, with figures due from Bank of America, Charles Schwab and BNY Mellon, plus store card issuer Synchrony, recently battling concerns over consumer spending.
Tuesday 19 April
TV streamer Netflix posts quarterly earnings on Tuesday, along with Dow components IBM and Travelers, mining group Rio Tinto, aerospace and defence contractor Lockheed Martin, warehouse investor Prologis, US banks Truist, Fifth Third and First Horizon, oilfield services firm Halliburton and recruitment group Manpower. Also look out for Japanese industrial production data and US building permits and housing starts.
Wednesday 20 April
A busy schedule on Wednesday includes updates from electric vehicle firm Tesla, consumer goods multinational Proctor & Gamble, medical device firm Abbott, US health insurer Anthem, comms infrastructure provider Crown Castle, aluminium producer Alcoa, US airline United, healthcare services firm Tenet, US bank M&T and mining group BHP. We’ll also see the latest Japanese and eurozone trade balance data, German PPI, eurozone industrial production and US existing home sales. In February sales fell 7.2% month-on-month amid concerns over rising mortgage rates.
Thursday 21 April
Inflation in Europe takes the spotlight on Thursday with the latest eurozone CPI data release, the flash estimate for annual inflation having recently hit a record high of 7.5%. In the US keep an eye out for the Philadelphia Fed manufacturing index, while earnings include telecoms multinational AT&T, US railroad Union Pacific, tobacco firm PMI, miner Anglo American, business services group Rentokil Initial, US carrier American Airlines, car retailer AutoNation and UK estate agent Foxtons.
Friday 22 April
We close the week with Japanese national CPI, UK retail sales and flash manufacturing and services PMI data for Japan, France, Germany, the eurozone, the UK and the US. Dow components Verizon and American Express lead the earnings, the credit card firm having recently suffered outages across its network. Figures are also due from enterprise software firm SAP, offshore drilling company Schlumberger and US bank Regions Financial.
