The week ahead: 21/02/22

Three of the Big Four UK banks report this week, HSBC, Barclays and Lloyds. We’ll also see revised Q4 GDP figures in the US, France and Germany, along with quarterly earnings from retailers Home Depot, Macy’s, Lowe’s, TJX and Foot Locker, and mining firms Antofagasta, Rio Tinto and Anglo American.

Monday 21 February

While Monday is a public holiday in the US, we’ll get the flash manufacturing and services PMI data for Japan, France, Germany, the eurozone and the UK. Also look out for German PPI figures. Earnings include US energy company Williams and South African energy and chemical firm Sasol.

Tuesday 22 February

UK bank HSBC issues annual results on Monday, after last week announcing that it is scaling back its Swiss private bank operation. Figures are also due from home improvement retailer Home Depot, healthcare equipment firms Medtronic and Agilent, self-storage service Public Storage, cybersecurity multinational Palo Alto Networks, software firm Cadence, commercial property investor Realty Income, data analytics firm Verisk, copper miner Antofagasta and US department store Macy’s. Among the macroeconomic data we’ve got the German Ifo business climate index, the CBI’s report on UK industrial trends orders, the US flash manufacturing and services PMI and the Conference Board’s US consumer confidence.

   Barclays chart: 18/02/22

Keep an eye out on Wednesday for earnings from UK bank Barclays, mining group Rio Tinto, online travel agent Booking, US hardware store Lowe’s, biotech firm BioMarin, Brazilian oil company Petrobras, US retailer TJX, insurance multinational Munich Re, online auction site eBay, DAX component Henkel, self-storage firm Extra Space Storage, energy company Entergy and brewer Molson Coors. The German GfK consumer climate survey is also released, along with eurozone CPI (a potential revision of the record 5.1% annual inflation rate) and the US weekly oil production report.

Go long or short of UK, US and European equities.

Thursday 24 February

Another major UK bank, Lloyds, reports earnings on Thursday, as recent rate rises change the picture of the UK banking sector. Figures are also due from financial software firm Intuit, US brewer Anheuser-Busch, telecoms company Deutsche Telekom, luxury carmaker Mercedes Benz, UK miner Anglo American, beverage conglomerate Keurig Dr Pepper, cloud computing firm VMware, US software corporation Autodesk, UK defence contractor BAE Systems, electric utility American Electric Power, Spanish telecoms firm Telefonica and UK government service provider Serco. In the US, watch out for the second estimate of Q4 GDP, January new home sales and the weekly initial jobless claims, while overnight in Japan the latest Tokyo CPI is released.

Friday 25 February

We’ll see growth data for two major European economies on Friday as the revised French and German GDP figures are released (preliminary figures showed France rebounding while Germany contracts). Other data includes French consumer spending and PPI, and US durable goods order and pending home sales. Earnings come from US energy companies EOG Resources and Sempra, German chemical producer BASF, UK property portal Rightmove and sportswear retailer Foot Locker.
